Hydro, air or immersion cooling in Gulf heat

Segments research team · Aktualisiert am 9. Oktober 2026 · 3 Min. Lesezeit

In the Gulf, cooling decides uptime. Air-cooled ASICs are built for intake air up to about 40 °C, and UAE summer air passes 45 °C, so they need well-engineered airflow and can still throttle in August. Hydro-cooled machines carry their heat away in water and are the most efficient models on sale; immersion suits large, purpose-built sites.

Air cooling: cheapest machine, hardest summer

Most ASICs are air-cooled. Manufacturers rate them for intake air up to around 40 °C; above that the control board lowers frequency to protect the chips, and hashrate drops. A Gulf site keeps air-cooled machines in range with high airflow, hot-aisle separation and, at the hottest times, evaporative or mechanical cooling. Dust is the second enemy: sand-laden air clogs fans and heatsinks, so cleaning is part of the job, not an extra.

Hydro cooling: built for heat

Hydro models such as the Antminer S23 Hyd and S21 XP Hyd have no fans on the hashboards; coolant flows through plates on the chips and carries the heat to dry coolers outside. They are the most efficient machines on sale (the S23 Hyd runs at about 9.5 J/TH) and much quieter. They need a hydro rack or container, which is why they cost more to install and are usually hosted rather than run at home.

Immersion: for purpose-built sites

Immersion puts whole air-cooled machines, fans removed, into tanks of non-conductive fluid. It handles heat and dust well and allows some overclocking, but the tanks, fluid and handling make it a choice for large sites built around it rather than a few machines.

Which should you choose?

  • Hosting a few machines in the UAE: an efficient air-cooled model in a well-run site, or a hydro model if the site has hydro racks. Ask the host how it keeps air machines in range in August.
  • Lowest cost per terahash over the machine’s life: usually hydro, because efficiency compounds over years of power bills and survives the 2028 halving best.
  • Running at home: air or a small desktop unit only; hydro needs a cooling loop, and every ASIC is loud and hot.

Segments hosts air-cooled and hydro-cooled machines in its UAE centres and places each in a centre that suits it; cleaning and monitoring are included in the all-in rate. Compare models with their efficiency on the Antminer S23 and S21 pages, or see hosting.

Fragen

Can air-cooled Bitcoin miners run in the UAE summer?
Yes, in a site engineered for it. Air-cooled ASICs are rated for intake air up to around 40 °C, so a Gulf site needs strong airflow and extra cooling at peak heat; otherwise machines throttle and hashrate drops.
Is hydro cooling better than air for Bitcoin mining?
In hot climates, usually: hydro models are the most efficient on sale (around 9.5–12 J/TH), much quieter and unaffected by dust, but they cost more and need hydro racks or containers.
What is immersion cooling in Bitcoin mining?
Machines run submerged in a non-conductive fluid that carries heat to a heat exchanger. It suits large purpose-built sites; for a few machines, air or hydro hosting is simpler.
