Antminer S23 vs S21: what you pay in power for every terahash

Segments research team · Aktualisiert am 31. Oktober 2026 · 5 Min. Lesezeit

An Antminer S23 Hyd draws 9.5 joules per terahash; an S21 Pro draws 15 and a plain S21 17.5. Hosted at Segments at 6.0¢/kWh, that left the S23 about 58% of the bitcoin it mined after power on 31 October 2026, against 34% for the S21 Pro and 23% for the S21. It costs more per terahash to buy, and this page lays out that trade.

The one number on the spec sheet that sets the bill

A miner’s efficiency, in joules per terahash (J/TH), is the power it draws for each terahash of work. Multiply it by the hashrate and you have the machine’s draw in watts: an S23 Hyd at 580 TH/s and 9.5 J/TH draws 5,510 W; an S21 Pro at 234 TH/s and 15 J/TH draws 3,510 W. Power is billed by the kWh, so J/TH fixes the bill for every terahash for as long as the machine runs. J/TH explained covers the arithmetic.

Power per terahash at Segments’ hosting rates

Segments hosts every machine a client owns at one rate, 6.0¢/kWh, with installation paid once. At that rate, a terahash on an S23 costs about a third less in power than one on an S21 Pro:

MachineEfficiencyHosting ratePower a month, per TH
Antminer S23 Hyd9.5 J/TH6.0¢$0.40
Antminer S21 XP Hyd12 J/TH6.0¢$0.50
Antminer S21e XP Hyd13 J/TH6.0¢$0.54
Antminer S21 XP13.5 J/TH6.0¢$0.56
Antminer S21 Pro15 J/TH6.0¢$0.62
Antminer S2117.5 J/TH6.0¢$0.73
A month of 30.4 days at the 95% uptime target. Power per TH a day = J/TH × 24 ÷ 1,000 × the rate. Hosting is invoiced on the kWh actually used.

How much of what it mines is left after power

Pools pay by the terahash. On 31 October 2026 one TH/s mined about 0.00000042 BTC a day, roughly $0.033 at a Bitcoin price near $76,900; today’s hashprice is below. Take away the power for that terahash and what remains is yours, before the pool fee.

Left after power = 1 − power per TH a day ÷ revenue per TH a day, at the difficulty (148.36 T) and Bitcoin price of 31 October 2026, before pool fees. Uptime cuts revenue and power alike, so it does not change the share.

Difficulty rises as machines join the network. Each rise takes a little off every terahash’s revenue while its power stays the same, so the machine that keeps the bigger share has more room for it.

What one bitcoin costs in power

The same figures turned around: the power a terahash draws in a day, divided by the bitcoin it mines in a day.

Antminer S21 XP Hyd6.0¢≈ $40,800

One S23 does the work of two and a half S21 Pros

At 580 TH/s, one S23 Hyd hashes as much as 2.5 S21 Pros. Fewer machines means fewer units to install, fewer fans and power supplies to wear, and one machine to watch instead of several. For a fleet of about 1 PH/s:

Whole machines at manufacturer hashrates, the fewest of each model that reach 1 PH/s.

What they cost to buy

Here the S21 range has the edge. On 31 October 2026 the S23 Hyd cost about 1.7 times as much per terahash as an S21 XP Hyd and nearly three times as much as an S21 Pro. Its power saving narrows that gap each month but does not close it within the first 12-month hosting term. The S23 is the machine for buyers who put the share of each bitcoin first and want fewer machines for the same hashrate; an S21 is the machine for buyers who put the lowest price per terahash first.

The Antminer S23 page works out the first 12 months per terahash, price, installation, transport and power, for every model at today’s prices. Today’s prices for three of them:

S23 without buying a machine

Segments also offers S23 as a token: a share of a published pool of hydro miners, held in a Solana wallet and staked to the holder’s own pool. Its electricity is charged at the S23 pool tariff of 6.5¢/kWh on a 9.5 J/TH basis, and it can be bought from the price of one token, with no machine to buy, ship or host. Today’s figures are on the homepage S23 panel.

S23 is a token. Its price can go down as well as up, it is not title to a specific machine, and mining output is not guaranteed. Availability depends on where you live.

Fragen

Is the Antminer S23 cheaper to run than the S21?
Per terahash, yes. At 9.5 J/TH an S23 Hyd hosted at 6.0¢/kWh drew about $0.40 a month in power per TH on 31 October 2026, against $0.62 for an S21 Pro and $0.73 for an S21 at the same rate. Per machine it draws more, because it hashes more.
Why does the S23 cost more per terahash?
It is the newest generation, built to draw less power for each terahash, and buyers pay for that up front. At today’s prices its power saving narrows the gap with an S21 each month but does not close it within the first 12-month hosting term. What it gives in return is a bigger share of each bitcoin mined and fewer machines for the same hashrate.
What hosting rate does the S23 Hyd get at Segments?
The same 6.0¢/kWh as an S21, with installation paid once. The rate covers power, cooling, monitoring, cleaning and routine maintenance.
How many S21 machines equal one S23?
About two and a half S21 Pros (234 TH/s each), or three S21s (200 TH/s), hash as much as one S23 Hyd (580 TH/s). They draw about 60% and 85% more power to do it.
