Cloud mining

Is cloud mining legit? How to check any offer in five minutes

Segments research team · Mis à jour le 26 octobre 2026 · 4 min de lecture

Some cloud mining is real: you rent hashrate from machines that exist, it mines to a pool you can see, and what you earn moves with the market. Most of what search results and social ads show is not. Seven checks tell the two apart, and a real provider passes all of them.

Disclosure: Segments sells cloud hashrate. The checks below are the ones we would want any provider, including us, to pass. Our own answers are at the end.

The seven checks

1. Is there a licensed company you can look up?

A real provider names its legal company, its licence number and the authority that issued it, on the site and on the contract. Look the licence up on the issuer’s own register. A brand name with no company, or a company registered only as a shell abroad, fails.

2. Does the hashrate show up in a pool you choose?

This is the single best test. Real hashrate can be pointed at a pool account you open yourself, where you see it as a worker and are paid by the pool, not by the seller. A dashboard on the seller’s own site proves nothing: anyone can draw a number.

3. Are returns fixed or guaranteed?

Mining income moves every day with the Bitcoin price and network difficulty. A "guaranteed 2% a day", "principal returned" or fixed daily payout cannot come from mining; it comes from newer customers’ deposits. Regulators including the UK FCA keep public warning lists of such schemes.

4. Does the price pass the hashprice test?

Pools publish what a terahash earns a day, the hashprice; today’s figure, when the live feed has it, is shown below. A real offer costs somewhat more than that per terahash per day, because the seller covers power, the machine and a margin. An offer that promises to pay you more than the hashprice has to fund the difference from somewhere else.

Hashprice
$0.0358 par TH/s et par jour
Chiffres en direct, relevés à 29 oct., 10:15 heure du Golfe

5. Can the coin be mined at all?

XRP cannot be mined, and neither can most stablecoins or exchange tokens, yet "XRP cloud mining" sites exist. If the coin has no proof-of-work, the offer is fiction.

6. Can you name, or visit, the site where the machines run?

Real hashrate runs in real buildings. A provider should say where, show real footage rather than renders, and let you visit. "Our green farms around the world" with stock photos fails.

7. Who invoices you, and how do you get your money out?

You should receive an invoice from the licensed company, with tax where it applies, and know exactly how payouts reach you. Withdrawal "taxes" or fees you must pay before you can withdraw, and referral schemes paying several levels deep, are the classic warning signs. The Segments affiliate programme has one level and pays only on what the clients a partner introduced pay.

Red flags at a glance

  • Fixed daily percentages, "principal returned", or ROI promised up front.
  • Large sign-up bonuses in crypto and multi-level referral rewards.
  • Coins that cannot be mined (XRP, USDT) offered for mining.
  • No company, no licence number, no address you can check.
  • Earnings visible only on the seller’s dashboard, never in a pool you control.
  • Paid "best cloud mining" lists and press releases as the only reviews.
  • A fee to unlock a withdrawal.

Questions

Is cloud mining legit?
Some is. A legitimate offer comes from a licensed company you can look up, sends hashrate to a pool you choose, promises no fixed return, prices hashrate above the network hashprice and lets you see where the machines run. Offers that fail those checks usually pay old customers with new deposits.
How can I tell if a cloud mining site is a scam?
Ask to point the hashrate at your own pool account. If the seller can’t or won’t, or promises fixed daily returns, a sign-up bonus, or mining of a coin like XRP that can’t be mined, treat it as a scam and check regulator warning lists.
Is cloud mining profitable?
It can earn less than buying bitcoin outright, because the provider prices hashrate above the hashprice to cover power and margin. What you gain is mining without owning hardware; whether it pays depends on the Bitcoin price and difficulty during the contract.
Can you withdraw cloud mining earnings at any time?
With a real provider, earnings are paid by the pool to your wallet under the pool’s payout rules. A fee demanded before you can withdraw is a common sign of a scam.
